The early childhood development centres (ECDC) here were built by AEE Rwanda to provide a safe and educational place for children below the age for mandatory schooling. Many young children either accompany their parents to work or are left at home alone, with a five year old perhaps being in charge. The parents must work to provide food.

The ECDCs provide a safe, hygienic, and stimulating environment for the children during the working day, where they learn basic curriculum, and importantly socialise with other children during the day.
